How to Reset Lighting

How to Reset Lighting thumbnail
Resetting lights depends on the problem.

Lighting is important in day-to-day life for safety, security and for entertainment. Lights are used regularly at home, in businesses and on stage to illuminate people and objects. If a light malfunctions, it could be an issue with the bulb, the power supply or the base of the light itself. Resetting a light can get it up and running again without requiring an entirely new lighting system. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the breaker that is powering the light and then turn it back on again a minute later. This resets the power going to the light and may get the light working again.

    • 2

Flip the light switch or power switch on the light itself and toggle it several times to reset the light and see if it resumes normal operation.

    • 3

Wiggle the bulb to reset its connection with the power supply and see if it lights. Wait for the bulb to cool down before doing this to prevent burning your fingers because lights can get extremely hot.

    • 4

Replace the bulb outright, which also resets the light. Turn the power off before replacing to prevent any injuries during the process.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some lights will have a specific "reset" button on them. Push the button to automatically reset the light system without further action needed if the light is working properly.
