Field Turf Removal
Turf is another name for sod, or the layer of lawn grass that sits on the top soil. Removing turf will allow you to convert a field into a vegetable or flower garden or an orchard. You can remove turf and landscape the field in any way you want. While using a spade is the simplest method, a mechanical option is better suited to removing turf from an entire field. Rent or purchase a mechanical turf cutter. This machines resemble a lawnmower with a blade on the front that slices the turf at a 1-inch depth.

Turn on the turf cutter and begin walking the field slowly in a straight line. The blade of the turf cutter will cut the turf in a strip as you walk. Continue slowly walking until you reach the end of the field. If you have a very large field, you can use a riding turf cutter so you don't have to walk.

Turn the turf cutter around and repeat the cutting in the opposite direction. Continue cutting up the turf in strips until you have separated all the turf from the top soil.

Roll the strips of cut turf up and compost them or discard them. You will now have a bare soil field.
