How to Set Up a Voom Receiver for an OTA

How to Set Up a Voom Receiver for an OTA thumbnail
Voom ceased operations in 2005.

Voom was a short-lived satellite TV service created to compete with other providers like DirecTV and Dish Network. Though the Voom service is no longer available, its receivers (Motorola model DSR550), which were designed to also receive local over-the-air (OTA) TV signals when connected to an antenna, can still be used to pick up OTA channels with the proper setup. However, only receivers that were active at the time Voom ceased broadcasting can still be used as an OTA receiver/tuner.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the coaxial cable from your antenna to the Off Air Module coaxial input located on the right side of the rear of the receiver. If the receiver has a diplexer box covering this module, remove this box before connecting the antenna if you are not using the powered antenna originally supplied with the receiver.

    • 2

Connect the receiver to your TV using one of the video output types supported by the receiver: component video, coaxial, S-video or composite RCA. If using an S-video cable, also connect a pair of composite RCA audio cables (red and white connectors) from the receiver to the composite audio input that accompanies your TV's S-video input.

    • 3

Power on the receiver and set the TV to the receiver's input. Press the "Voom" button on the receiver's remote control to open the System Settings menu. Select the "Installer's Menu" option and then select "Installation Wizard." If you do not see this option in the Installer's Menu, the software is old and the receiver cannot scan for local channels.

    • 4

Select "Scan Local Channels" from the ensuing Installation Steps menu. The receiver will scan for all available channels within the range of the antenna and display the channels it picks up in the box below the signal/scan bar.

    • 5

Select the "Aim Off-Air Antenna" option from the Installation Steps menu if the receiver is not picking up a channel or channels that should be within range. Enter the RF channel number in the box provided and aim the antenna until the signal/scan bar turns green.

    • 6

Press the "Green" button on the remote control to save the found channel settings, exit the menu and tune to a saved channel for viewing.

Tips & Warnings

  • If the signal/scan bar remains yellow and does not turn green when performing the "Aim Antenna" step, you may need a larger and/or more powerful antenna or to reposition the antenna at a higher location.
