How to Clean an SCBA
A self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) is used professionally by firefighters when working in areas with little to no oxygen. They are different from a deep-sea diving breathing apparatus (SCUBA), which are used underwater. SCBAs are susceptible to dirt and ash and need to be cleaned properly to remain functional. Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) regulations require that SCBA respirators be cleaned after each use. This process can be completed with the right cleaning solution.

1
Clean the hose and tanks. Disconnect the hose and tanks from the breathing mask. Carefully wipe any dirt or ash from the tank connections with a damp cloth. For stubborn stains, mix two teaspoons of dish detergent with a half-gallon of water in a bucket. Rinse the couplings with running water, then wipe with a dry cloth. Set aside in a clean spot.

Clean the mask. Wipe the mask down inside and out with a dry cloth. In a bucket, mix a 3/4 tsp of hypochlorite solution with a gallon of water (the ratio is 1 to 1000 cleaning solution to water). Wash the mash in the bucket with the cleaning solution, then wipe with a dry cloth.
