How to Be a CNC Mechanic

Machine shops use computer numerical control devices.

Many of the machines used in manufacturing are automatically programmed and operated, a function referred to as numerical control. When the programming is done by a computer, known as computer numerical control, the entire process is automated. Computer numerical control machines are not problem free however, and there is always a need for mechanics who can service, repair and maintain them. Becoming a computer numerical control mechanic requires experience working with these machines and some sort of certification training.

Instructions

1. Get journeyman status as an industrial mechanic or industrial electrician. Journeyman status means you have completed training and an apprenticeship under someone who is a master of the trade, but you are not yet a master.

2. Gain experience in a machine shop or manufacturing plant, working with computer numerical control machines. Most computer numerical control mechanic positions require that you complete several years working hands on with the machines in troubleshooting or maintenance before you will be considered as a candidate for a computer numerical control mechanic's job.

3. Take a computer numerical control mechanic certification course. A variety of technical colleges, vocational school and community colleges offer the training as well as related skills such as programming and computer aided design. Complete a recognized certification program to ensure your chances of getting hired as a computer numerical control mechanic.
