Nothing beats the taste of a fresh crab, which is why you need to keep them alive before you cook them. The most popular types of crabs are blue crabs, dungeness crabs, snow crabs and king crabs. All of these breeds of crab can be kept in the refrigerator overnight if you do not want to eat them on the same day. Purchase live crabs that smell salty and fresh and seem to be active. Place the crabs into a large bowl as soon as you return home.

Cover the bowl with damp paper towels or newspapers. Avoid filling the bowl with water unless you have an air pump. The crabs require oxygen to stay alive. Place the bowl inside the refrigerator fridge.

Check on the crabs periodically to ensure they are still alive. If the crabs die they should be consumed as soon as possible.

Tips & Warnings
If a crab dies and starts to give off a bad smell, it means that the crab is starting to rot.
If you have leftovers from your crab after cooking, they should be stored immediately in the fridge or in the freezer.
