How to Step Flash Asphalt Roofing Shingles

How to Step Flash Asphalt Roofing Shingles thumbnail
Allow a weekend to complete step flashing asphalt shingles on your roof.

Step flashing ties a gable roofline into an existing wall. It protects seams, making water flow over shingled areas, away from the gaps around the roof and the tie-in points of the siding. Step flashing commonly is available in 5-by-7 and 5-by-10 aluminum or metal blanks. The blanks then get bent into "ells", and installed with one leg of the "ell" behind the siding and the other end underneath the shingles. Step flashing is installed at the same time you install asphalt shingles. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Remove this siding approximately 2 inches above the roof sheathing with a circular saw. Set the cutting depth to the siding thickness on the saw.

    • 2

Cut the side of the siding flush with the top of the roof using a reciprocating saw held at a low angle.

    • 3

Pry up the siding using a pry bar, and tuck approximately 2 inches of building paper under it. Do not fasten the siding until after you install the step flashing.

    • 4

Shingle up to the siding, trimming the last shingle according to the manufacturer's directions using a utility knife.

    • 5

Bend a piece of step flashing in half. Place it next to the lowest corner of the roofline. Mark a trim line on the step flashing piece with a pencil following the vertical edge of the roof. Cut the step flashing on the trim line using metal snips.

    • 6

Pry out the lower courses of siding and trim in the way using a pry bar. Insert spacers behind the siding and trim to prop it.

    • 7

Apply roofing cement according to the manufacturer's directions to the base of the flashing in the area where the overlap will form. Tuck the trimmed piece of step flashing under the siding and secure it driving a rubber-gasket nail near the top, and into the roof deck using a hammer.

    • 8

Install a shingle by pressing it firmly into the roofing cement. Secure the shingle to the roof using roofing nails and a hammer.

    • 9

Tuck another piece of step flashing under the trim or siding. Overlap it with the first piece you installed by approximately 2 inches. Place the flashing on the roofing cement applied at the top of the shingle. Secure the shingle in place using roofing nails and a hammer. Do not drive nails through the flashing.

    • 10

Continue shingling and flashing the entire roof. Verify that the shingle that the tabs stagger in regular patterns, with a consistent exposed are on the shingle tabs.

    • 11

Cut off the shingle tabs using a utility knife and use them to create a roof ridge using roofing nails and a hammer.
