How to Upgrade a WEP to the Next Tier

WEP or wired equivalent protocol, was first implemented in 1999 to secure wireless Internet connections. WEP, though effective for the time, has since become outdated. The next tier of encryption up from WEP is known as WPA, or Wi-Fi protected access. Switching your encryption from WEP to WPA requires few steps, and it is no different to operate than WEP once it has been properly set up.

Instructions

    • 1

Enter the address for the admin page to your network. This is usually done by entering the IP address into the address bar in an Internet browser. Enter the admin user name and password.

    • 2

Access the security options on the admin page. Each router manufacturer's admin page is set up slightly different, but the security settings can usually be found under "Security," "Network Properties" or "Wireless Security."

    • 3

Change the encryption method from WEP to WPA, and generate the key. The key will be the password entered to access the Internet in the future, so write it down. Save the changes, then exit the browser.
