How to Increase in a Tunisian Crochet

Tunisian crochet is most often used to make thick, double-sided afghans. Because Tunisian crochet requires a double-ended crochet hook, it can be confusing for those used to regular crochet. Instead of working Tunisian stitches one at a time, you load the crochet hook with stitches like a knitting needle and pull a strand from a second ball of yarn through all the stitches. Add stitches to a row of Tunisian crochet using a technique called a forward pass increase.

Instructions

    • 1

Insert the left end of the hook into the first horizontal bar between the first and second stitches of a forward pass. The vertical bars are the stitches through which you pick up stitches.

    • 2

Wrap the end of the crochet hook over the top, as you would for a normal crochet stitch.

    • 3

Pull the wrap through the horizontal bar and to the front of the stitches. You begin a row with one stitch on the hook, and you will now have two stitches.

    • 4

Continue loading the hook with stitches across the row as usual for a forward pass.

    • 5

Make additional increases through subsequent horizontal bars as needed.
