How to Force Google to Notice Your Backlinks

Links on other websites pointing to your website, or backlinks, are critical for ranking well on search engines. Google analyzes both the number, content and quality of links pointing to a website to determine its place in search results for a keyword. For example, an umbrella store with many links from reputable sites with the keyword "umbrellas" will be one of the first Google results for that term. Webmasters take backlinks very seriously for this reason. Sometimes it can take a while for Googlebot, Google's spider that crawls and analyzes Internet sites, to find new backlinks. Although you cannot force Google to notice backlinks immediately, there are steps you can take to significantly speed up the process.

Instructions

    • 1

Build backlinks on established websites. The Googlebot is likely to visit these sites more often to check for new links. Google checks on subpages deep within established sites and newer sites infrequently. Avoid websites with illegal content and obvious link farms -- sites that exist only for the purpose of linking to other websites. Google may not recognize these backlinks for quality reasons.

    • 2

Create links to sites containing backlinks to your site. This may sound counter-intuitive, but is worthwhile if you want Google to notice your links quickly. Link to backlink sources on social news sites, social networking sites like Twitter and submit the links to ping services. Pinging sends out a notification to various servers indicating that a given URL has updates. The servers then post this update online, creating dozens of links to the URL you submit. These short-term links make it easier for the Googlebot to find the new links to your site.

    • 3

Click new links to your site to make sure they work. Typos occur more often than you think and are the easiest and most avoidable way for Google to miss links to your site. If you submitted a link to a public directory or other user-edited site yourself, correct misspellings immediately. If you find a link to your site on a traditional static page and can't edit it yourself, contact the site owner and politely ask the individual to fix the error.

Tips & Warnings

  • Links containing the rel="nofollow" attribute do not carry any weight for search engine optimization purposes. Google records these links but they will not help your site rank higher on search engines. Understand the linking policy of backlink sources to make sure your links are "do follow."
