How to Braid a Hemp Bracelet

How to Braid a Hemp Bracelet thumbnail
Hemp twine is usually a natural tan.

Hemp is a natural fiber used to make fabric, rope and twine. Hemp twine is often used to create jewelry such as bracelets, anklets and necklaces. To create a hemp twine bracelet, you knot the hemp in various patterns. The simplest pattern to complete is a series of knots that creates a spiral bracelet. Hemp twine comes in different thicknesses. Thicker hemp twine creates a thicker bracelet; thick hemp twine bracelets are more masculine. Thin hemp twine creates a more delicate look.

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap a length of hemp twine around your wrist or the wrist of the person the bracelet is for to determine how long the twine needs to be. Double that length and add 2 inches. Cut the twine and fold it in half.

    • 2

Cut another length of hemp twine; this length must be about three times as long as your original piece. Fold it in half.

    • 3

Knot both lengths of hemp twine together at their centers where they are folded, leaving a loop of hemp twine half an inch long sticking out of the top.

    • 4

Clamp the knots under the clipboard's clamp to hold them in place. Lay the twine out so that the two shorter lengths of twine are in between the two longer lengths.

    • 5

Label the two long lengths of hemp as length A and length B by marking their tips with different colored markers.

    • 6

Hold the two short lengths of twine tautly together by their ends. Place strand A over the center strands and under strand B.

    • 7

Place strand B under the center strands and through the loop strand A creates.

    • 8

Pull on the long lengths of cord to tighten the knot you created around the two shorter lengths.

    • 9

Repeat this process; this pattern creates a spiral. Stop knotting once there is about one inch of the shorter lengths remaining.

    • 10

Tie the four lengths of cord into a traditional knot to complete your bracelet. Trim the lengths of the longer hemp twine to the same length as the short lengths. To wear your bracelet, tie it around your wrist using the loop at the top.

Tips & Warnings

  • Add beads as you knot by sliding a bead up the two shorter lengths, then continuing to knot past it.

  • Select different thicknesses of hemp to create different looking bracelets.

  • Use different colored hemp for different bracelets; natural tan is traditional, but most colors can be found.
