How to Lay Freeze-Proof Sand for Winter Road Maintenance
While salt creates traction and melts ice on roads, it also causes rust on the underside of your car. Unlike salt, freeze-proof sand creates traction without causing any vehicle damage when used on its own. Many cities with moderate to major snow in the winter plow main roads but leave smaller residential areas unplowed. If you live in an area with treacherous winter roads, you can lay down your own freeze-proof sand to make your neighborhood safer. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Purchase a sand or salt dispenser from a hardware store. Pour the freeze-proof sand in the dispenser.
-
2
Use the snow blower to remove as much snow from the road as possible. Laying the freeze-proof sand on top of packed snow and ice won't be as effective as laying it on top of a thin layer of snow and ice.

3
Run the sand dispenser over the road slowly. Allow about a quarter-inch to a half-inch of sand to fall on the road to create the proper amount of traction.
