Check out all the beaches in your area to decide which one best fits your skimboarding needs.

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Decide whether you want to ride waves or do flat-sand tricks. A steep beach causes shorebreak waves, which are the best for wave riding. A flat beach allows you to skim for a longer distance, which is better for tricks.

  2. Step 2

Drive along the coast and stop to check out each beach you come upon. Look for other people skimboarding, but don't rule it out if you don't see anyone.

  3. Step 3

Check out the sand on each beach. Rocks and shells won't allow you to skim safely. You can move seaweed as long as the piles are not too big.

  4. Step 4

Make sure there aren't too many people. Early morning and around sunset are the best times to avoid the crowds.

  5. Step 5

Skimboard safely. Remember skimboarding is a land sport, not a water sport (especially when you fall).

Tips & Warnings
  • Wearing a wetsuit, or even just a springsuit or an old t-shirt, can protect you from a painful sand-rash when falling.
  • Look for strange formations in the sand. The tide can do some crazy things; beaches are always changing. These formations can turn the beach into a skate park for skimboarding.
  • Do not attempt to skimboard on rocky beaches.
  • Skimboarding is an inherently dangerous activity that can result in serious injury or death. We recommend that you seek proper training and equipment before attempting this activity.
