How to Read a UNIX FTP Log

The UNIX operating system remains a common tool used to run the backend of websites and servers. Some UNIX configurations will store logs of activity on a server's file transfer protocol (FTP) account automatically and others can be set up to do so. Once you have the UNIX FTP log, though, you need to read it. The .log file extension may seem unfamiliar, but this is just a plain text file. As with all plain text files, reading it is simple.

Instructions

    • 1

Put the UNIX log file onto your hard drive, if you have not done so already. Contact your server admin if you are not sure how, as the process varies.

    • 2

      Right-click the UNIX FTP log.

    • 3

Select "Open With," then select "Notepad." This will open the FTP log as a basic text document for you read (or edit).
