How to Make a Scare Box
A scare box is a spooky prop typically put out at Halloween as a fun prank or as part of a haunted house. The scare box can be as simple as a box with someone hiding in it who jumps out to scare unsuspecting trick-or-treaters or it can be a more involved setup such as a "Halloween feel box," where kids reach in to touch "brains," "eyeballs," and "guts," which are really cold spaghetti noodles, grapes and Jell-O. You can make a scare box easily at home, using an old cardboard box and a little preparation.
Things You'll Need
- 3 cardboard boxes
- Scissors
- 3 bowls
- Cold, cooked spaghetti
- Peeled grapes
- Jell-O
- Marker

1
Cut the top flaps off of three, medium-sized cardboard boxes. Appliance boxes, such as those used for toasters or blenders, work well.
-
2
Flip the boxes over so that the side with the flaps cut off is on the bottom. Cut a circle from the side of the boxes that is now on top. Make the circles just big enough for a hand to fit inside.

3
Place three bowls on a table. Fill one with peeled grapes, one with cold, cooked spaghetti noodles, and one with Jell-O.
-
4
Place one box over each bowl so that the side with the circles cut out is on top.
-
5
Label each box with a marker: write "Brains" on the box with the noodles, "Eyeballs" on the box with the grapes, and "Guts" on the box with the Jell-O.
