How to Use a Fluke IR Heat Probe

A Fluke IR heat probe allows the remote detection of an object's temperature.

Temperature is typically measured using a mercury thermometer which consists of a glass vial containing liquid mercury. Temperature changes lead to expansion and contraction of the mercury liquid which can be read off a scale. It can be useful to measure the temperature of an object without making contact with it and under these circumstances a Fluke infrared (IR) thermometer (heat probe) can be used.

Instructions

1. Remove the back panel of the Fluke IR thermometer. Under the panel there is a selection switch (marked A) to choose the units of temperature measurement. Select the desired units.

2. Place a 9-volt battery into the Fluke IR thermometer. Place the back panel back onto the main unit.

3. Point the infrared sensor at the top of the unit towards the object that needs its temperature to be measured. Press and hold the "On" button. A laser should be seen on the object. After a few seconds the temperature of the object will appear on the digital screen. The measured temperature will be held on the screen for seven seconds after the measurement has completed.
