How to Make an Afghan Khosti Turban

An afghan Khosti turban is a voluminous turban made from lightweight cotton typically about 200 inches long. Traditionally, the turban is made from striped, woven cloth. The cloth is wrapped around the head multiple times to create a somewhat chaotic style turban, very different from the neat folded turbans worn by people of the Sikh faith. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Fold a quarter-inch seam on the short edges of the four lengths of 35-by-50-inch, light cotton fabric.

    • 2

Pin the fabric pieces together along the short edges, overlapping the folded quarter-inch seam by a quarter-inch, so the raw edges of the fabric are encased on the fabric joins.

    • 3

Sew the joins together, topstitching on both sides of each join along the folded seam edge. Fold the two short ends over in another quarter-inch seam to encase the raw edge and sew together. The material will now be approximately 198 inches long.

    • 4

Fold a double quarter-inch seam over on the raw edges of the long sides of the fabric and sew together to complete the Khosti turban.

    • 5

Hang your head down and place the turban fabric over your head, with around 3 feet of fabric on one side, and the bulk of the fabric on the other.

    • 6

Pinch the two sides of the fabric around your head with your hands, so the fabric on your head forms a cap of sorts. Continue pinching the side with the 3-foot tail, as you twist the other side of fabric.

    • 7

Twist the fabric fairly loosely, and wrap it around your head in a circle as you go. Wrap slightly diagonally so most of your head is covered and continue until all the long end of the turban is around your head -- this will look quite bulky, but that is the style of the Khosti turban.

    • 8

Tuck the last foot or so of the turban fabric back into the folds of the wrap on your head to secure the turban in place and hang the 3-foot tail over one shoulder.
