How to Clean a Speaker Cone

Save

Speaker cones can collect dirt over years of use, especially if your speakers are lugged around to different places. This causes a buildup of dust and other grime. If you're hoping to sell your speakers or you don't like the look of dirty speaker cones, clean them. Speaker cones are sensitive, so take care in cleaning them to avoid damage.

Things You'll Need

  • Dry cloth
  • Paintbrush or toothbrush
  • Unplug the speaker. Disconnect any power sources.

  • Remove the grill, the fabric on the front of the speaker, from the speaker.

  • Wipe the speaker cone lightly, using a dry cloth. To avoid damage, don't use a dry cloth that contains any chemicals. As well, don't apply too much pressure. If this isn't enough to clean the speaker cone, perform the next step.

  • Wipe the speaker cone lightly using a paintbrush or toothbrush. Use the least amount of pressure possible to get out the grime that has built up.

  • Connect power sources and plug in the speaker when you're ready to use it again.

Tips & Warnings

  • A damp cloth can damage the speaker cone. Don't soak the cloth, paintbrush or toothbrush in water or cleaning fluid.
