How to Contact Google About Libel

No one likes to be talked about, especially if the rumors are malicious and untrue. Such false rumors can constitute slander, if spoken, or libel, if they appear in written form, whether online or in print. If a website contains defamatory -- false and damaging -- information about you, Google insists you contact the owner of the website first to ask for removal. If the owner won't cooperate, you can contact Google and request it to remove the site from search results, although the content itself will remain on the Web.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the Google Help page for removing content from Google.

    • 2

Click "Web Search" as the Google product to which your request relates.

    • 3

Click an option. In the case of libelous material, the two options that might apply are "I have a court order declaring certain content unlawful" and "Other legal issue that involves the removal of content."

    • 4

Click "This Form" when it appears.

    • 5

Provide the contact information, offending URL, or website address, and explain where indicated why you believe the page or site is libelous.

    • 6

Provide your digital signature and the date, then click "Submit."

Tips & Warnings

  • Only contact Google if you are sure the content qualifies as legal defamation. Google will only considering removing search results if you can show the site or page has broken the law.
