How to Disassemble the Canon IP 5000

If you are having a problem with your Canon IP 5000 printer such as an error message, you may wish to disassemble the unit in order to perform maintenance. The most common error that requires disassembly is the "Waste in Tank Full" error message. This error message means the waste ink sponge needs to be cleaned in order for the printer to operate correctly. Disassembling the printer is a fairly simple process and requires minimal tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Lift the top cover and insert the screwdriver into the two slots marked with arrows and press in the direction of the arrows to release the plastic clips. Release the two clips toward the back of the top of the printer as well.

    • 2

Use the screwdriver to release the clips on either side of the unit which connect the sides to the bottom of the printer. Remove the side covers.

    • 3

Locate the three plastic cog wheels on the side of the printer and turn the largest cog clockwise to unlock the printhead. Remove the top cover by releasing the clips on either side and one on the top front of the unit.

    • 4

Remove the cover surrounding the printer ports at the rear of the printer.

    • 5

Unplug the multicolored power supply cable near the rear of the machine and bend the clips on either side of the power supply to remove it.

    • 6

Remove the four screws holding the print engine in place. Two screws are located at the rear right and left of the machine and the other two are located at the front right and left.

    • 7

Remove the print engine and set it on one end on thick layers of paper to avoid dripping ink on surfaces. You now have access to the waste ink sponges at the bottom of the printer.
