  • 4 to 4 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4-ounce package active dry yeast
  • 3/4 cup warm water
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons salt
  • 1/2 cup warm milk

  • 1 large egg
  • 1/4 cup butter, melted
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar

Instructions

  1. Making the Dough

      Pour a 1/4-oz. packet of active dry yeast into a large mixing bowl. Add 1/4 cup of warm water and stir until the yeast is completely dissolved.

      Add to the mixing bowl 2 cups of flour, 3/4 cup of sugar, 1 1/2 tsp of salt, 1/2 cup of warm milk, 1/4 cup of softened butter one large egg and 1/2 cup of warm water. Mix the ingredients together for two minutes using an electric mixer on medium speed.

      Add the remaining 2 cups of flour to the bowl. Stir the mixture until you form a soft ball of dough.

      Lift the dough gently from the bowl and place it onto a lightly floured surface. Knead the dough for six to eight minutes, until it is smooth and elastic.

      Place the dough into a large, greased bowl. Turn the dough over to grease the top.

      Cover the dough with a dry washcloth or dishtowel and let it rise in a warm place until it has doubled in size. This takes approximately one hour. Punch the dough down once it has properly risen.

    Preparing and Baking the Cinnamon Twists

      Preheat the oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. Remove the dough and place it on a floured surface, then lightly dust a rolling pin with flour.

      Roll the dough into a 16-inch by 12-inch rectangle. Brush the entire surface with 1/4 cup of melted butter using a pastry brush.

      Cut the dough lengthwise, into three even-sized strips. Cut each of these strips into 16, 4-inch by 1-inch strips. Twist all the strips several times, then place them two inches apart on a greased baking sheet. Cover the twists with a dry washcloth or dishtowel and allow them to rise for 30 to 45 minutes, or until doubled in size.

      Uncover the twists and place the baking sheet into the oven. Bake for 15 minutes, or until golden brown.
