How to Repair Damaged Wall Anchors

If you have a piece of home decor hanging from a wall and it begins to sag, falling away from the wall, it is likely the anchor that has come loose or has split. When drywall or plaster is installed, the only way to hang objects on a wall is to install anchors into the drywall or plaster. In the alternative, heavy objects, such as televisions, are bolted to mounting plates fastened to the wall studs. Repairing damaged anchors is not difficult. Does this Spark an idea?

  • Screw gun
  • Needle-nose pliers
  • Quick-set joint compound
  • Plastic bowl
  • Spatula
  • Putty knife
  • Drill
  • Bits
  • 150-grit sandpaper
  • Replacement anchor

Instructions

      Take the object off the wall. Use a screw gun to get the mounting screws loose from the wall and out of the damaged anchors.

      Remove the damaged anchors by hand or use needle-nose pliers to carefully pull them out of the wall.

      Combine quick-set joint compound with water in a plastic bowl, following the manufacturer's proprietary instructions. Stir until well-blended with a spatula.

      Scoop the quick-set joint compound out of the bowl by hand to fill in the hole. Use a putty knife to smooth the compound, making it flush with the rest of the wall. Allow to dry as recommended by the manufacturer.

      Drill a pilot hole using a drill with a bit that is slightly smaller in diameter than the replacement anchor. Sand over the pilot hole to make smooth and even using 150-grit sandpaper.

      Push the replacement anchor into the pilot hole by hand, then gently tap into the hole all the way with a rubber mallet to finish. You may now rehang your home decor.
