How to Thread a Bernina Serger
Bernina, a company based in Switzerland, has been manufacturing quality home sewing products since 1932. Sergers are used to overlock edges of fabric, encasing them in thread that prevents frayed edges and strengthens seams that may encounter excessive wear. The serger simultaneously cuts, sews and overlocks the edges of the garment in one pass. Sergers can be set up to use from two to five threads, depending on the type of stitch desired and the fabric being sewn.
Instructions

Needles
-
1
Place all the cones onto the spool pin. Each spool pin will have color-coded markings to indicate where the threads should be placed to ensure proper threading.
-
2
Guide the thread into the slot in the telescoping thread holder assembly.
-
-
3
Guide thread from the first cone through the first thread guide. This guide is located at the top of the machine. Thread in a back left to front right direction.
-
4
Guide the thread through the corresponding groove on the machine and then toward the left.
-
5
Guide the thread under the thread guide plate, and then through the take up lever in a right to left direction.
-
6
Place the thread in the corresponding thread guide just above the needle housing. For example, the left thread will be in the left most groove, while the right thread will be in the last groove on the right.
-
7
Insert the needle threader through the eye of the needle. Whether or not the needle is threaded from back to front or front to back is specific to the individual Bernina serger model and the style of seam being sewn. Typically, the center thread is threaded from back to front and all others are threaded from front to back.
-
8
Insert thread into the needle threader.
-
9
Pull the needle threader back through the eye, bringing the thread with it. Continue pulling until the thread falls from the threader.
Loopers
-
10
Follow regular threading procedure, as in threading the needles.
-
11
Open the lower door under the needle assembly to expose the remaining looper mechanisms.
-
12
Guide the thread into the respective second and third thread guides on the front of the machine, ensuring the colored indicators match.
-
13
Use tweezers to continue to guide the threads through the holes on the mechanism indicated by the colored dots. Each looper will have three to four designated openings for the thread to be inserted. The thread will run from right to left and bottom to top through the mechanism, and the holes should be threaded in that order.
