How to Make Scars in Gimp

Learning to make scars in the free image manipulation program GIMP is useful for making people look ghastly or wounded. With some adjustments you can use this same skill to add scar-like textures to other organic things like tree trunks or terrain. This project makes use of GIMP's filters, which are commands that simulate natural effects by applying geometrical calculations to your image. Filters modify your images, so make copies of those images before you undertake this project.

Instructions

    • 1

Open the photo you want to edit in GIMP. Right click the highlighted item in the "Layers" window, which represents your loaded photo. Click the "Duplicate" command to make a new layer with a copy of the photo.

    • 2

Click the tool palette's icon shaped like a lasso to run the "Free" select tool, then click and drag the cursor over the photo where you want to apply the scar. Double click the mouse to complete the selection.

    • 3

Click the "Select" menu's "Feather" command, then type "15" in the dialog box that appears and click "OK." This action softens the edges of the region you selected so the scar will blend better with the surrounding skin.

    • 4

Click the "Filter" menu's "Distort" sub-menu, then click the "Emboss" command, which raises the apparent surface of an image to make it appear to have greater three dimensional depth. Click the "Bump map" option of the window that appears, then drag the "Azimuth" and other sliders until the "Preview" image appears sufficiently scar-like. Click "OK" to exit the "Emboss" window.

    • 5

Click the "Color" menu's "Hue" command, then drag the "Hue" slider slightly to the left to give the scar a slightly purplish hue. Drag the "Opacity" slider of the "Layers" window to the left until the slider indicates about 60 percent. This blends the scar with the original image.

    • 6

Click the yellow "X" icon from the tool palette to run the "Healing" tool, then press and hold the "Control" key. Click an image region close to the scar to sample the region's color. Release the "Control" key, then drag over the edges of the scar to blend them into the unscarred skin.
