How to Transfer Mechanical Engineering DETC Credits to RA

If you complete mechanical engineering coursework at a school accredited by the Distance Education and Training Council (DETC) you may experience challenges when transferring to a regionally accredited (RA) school. Be prepared to speak to school administrators about the feasibility of transferring credits, and to accept that some RA schools may not accept some or all of your previous coursework.

Instructions

    • 1

Contact the regionally accredited school or schools that interest you and ask about their mechanical engineering course transfer policy. Explain that some or all of your credits are from a school accredited by the DETC and ask if the school accepts or will consider applying these credits toward a degree. Each school handles academic transcript evaluation differently, so your coursework might undergo more than one evaluation. At some schools, representatives of both the registrar's office and a mechanical engineering department may review your transcripts and make decisions about transfer credit.

    • 2

Apply to the schools that will approve or consider your DETC coursework for transfer credit. Arrange to send your academic transcripts to these schools for review. In most cases, you should contact your previous school or schools and ask them to send your transcripts directly to the RA school or schools to which you apply.

    • 3

Wait for the schools to inform you as to whether they accept your application. After acceptance, the school should review your transcripts and let you know how much credit from your previous education transfers to a degree program.

    • 4

Compare the credit transfers offered by each RA school while you decide on which school to attend. Going to the school that offers you the most transfer credits can save you money and time in getting your degree, but you may want to take other factors, such as faculty, the school's reputation and the campus, into consideration.

Tips & Warnings

  • Begin the application process early. It may take a school longer to review your transcript if some or all of your credits are from non-regionally accredited schools.

  • Schools set their own transfer credit policies. Even though the DETC is recognized as a legitimate accrediting agency by the United States Department of education, some regionally accredited schools will not issue transfer credit for coursework completed at a DETC accredited school.
