How to Change the Default Post Field in WordPress

WordPress allows you to fully customize the fields that it displays on the post editing screen to give you complete control over all of the parameters of the post, or to create a minimal interface that eliminates distractions. For example, the "Discussion" field allows you to specify whether you will accept reader comments on a post, but you may have no need for this post if you have used your website's "Discussion" menu to globally disable comments on your website. Open the "Screen Options" menu on the post editing screen to select the fields that should appear by default in the post editor.

Instructions

    • 1

Navigate in your Web browser to the URL "mydomain.com/wp-admin," where "mydomain.com" is the URL of your WordPress website. Enter your user name and password to continue to the Dashboard.

    • 2

Click the "Posts" heading on the main menu, then click the "Add New" link -- or the "Edit" link under a post you have already published -- to display the post editing screen. The changes made on the editing screen for one post are persistent for all posts that you create or edit on your WordPress website.

    • 3

Click the "Screen Options" button next to the "Help" button at the top of the page. This displays a list of all of the fields that WordPress can display. Items with checks are displayed by default, and items without checks are hidden.

    • 4

Click the check box next to each field that you would like the post editing screen to display, and remove the check from the box next to each field that you would like to hide.

    • 5

Click the "1" or "2" radio button under "Screen Layout" to define the number of columns that you would like WordPress to use when displaying the fields on the post editing screen.

    • 6

Click the "Screen Options" button again to close the menu.

    • 7

Hover the mouse pointer over the title bar of any post editing field until the pointer turns into a four-sided arrow. Click and hold the mouse button while moving the pointer to move a post editing field to a different location on the screen. You can move any field except the main post editing field and the title field.

    • 8

Leave the post editing screen to save your changes.
