How Do I Change My Political Party in Illinois?
The freedom to vote for political candidates in the United States is one given to all citizens of the country age 18 and older who register with their states of residence to vote. Registered voters in Illinois are not required to declare party affiliation on their voter registration cards. This means the elections offices do not know which political party you support, such as Democratic, Republican or Green Party. However, in Illinois you are required to choose your political party when voting in primary elections so voting precinct volunteers know which ballot to give you. You are free to change your party at any time.

State your party affiliation so the precinct volunteers provide you with the correct ballot. You are not required to declare the same party as you did in previous primary elections; you may change your party affiliation verbally at any primary election.
