How to Use Privoxy With Google Chrome

Save

The proxy server application Privoxy provides many privacy features for browsing the Web and works with most popular Web browsers on common operating system platforms. It blocks most types of advertisements, banners and pop-up messages by default, but it can also help you manage your browser cookies and block certain websites if you edit the program's configuration files. Google Chrome supports Privoxy and lets you enter your proxy information in its advanced settings.

  • Open Privoxy if you don't have it running, then open Google Chrome.

  • Click the wrench icon at the right side of Chrome's address bar, then click "Options." Click "Under the Hood" in the left column of the page, then click "Change Proxy Settings" under the "Network" section.

  • Click the "LAN Settings" button near the bottom of the "Internet Properties" window that opened. Click the box next to "Use a Proxy Server for Your LAN (These Settings Will Not Apply to Dial-Up or VPN Connections)." Type "127.0.0.1" next to "Address" and "8118" next to "Port."

  • Click "OK" twice to finish the configuration.

Tips & Warnings

  • Advanced users can edit Privoxy's configuration files to allow specific advertisements from websites or to filter additional website content. Right-click the program's blue icon in the notification area and click "Edit" to view a list of the files you can edit. Click a file's name to open it in a text editor.
