How to Dye Sandblasted Glass

How to Dye Sandblasted Glass thumbnail
Sandblasted glass can be colored to add dimension.

Glass that has been sandblasted appears to be frosted or etched. Tiny particles of glass are removed from a larger piece by pressurized air or other high-pressure abrasive material. Sandblasting can be done in particular designs to resemble artwork or writing. Some windows, like bathroom windows, are completely sandblasted to make them opaque. Color can be added to sandblasted glass in a variety of ways.

Instructions

    • 1

Color directly on the glass with paint markers. This allows for coloring in fine details with fine-tipped markers.

    • 2

Spray paint the entire glass item or tape off areas and paint around them.

    • 3

Purchase rub and buff paint from a craft store. Apply the paint with a brush and gently rub it with a soft cloth to work it into the glass and make it shine.

    • 4

Buy enamel paint from a craft store. Use an eye dropper to apply the paint to the etchings and then dry it with a hair dryer. Enamel paint also comes in spray form and is found at hardware stores.

Tips & Warnings

  • Don't be tempted by stained-glass paint. It will shrink over time and change the appearance of the coloring.
