Instructions

    • 1

Set up a table as the basis for the cake display. Place a solid-colored or patterned tablecloth on the table, if you like.

    • 2

Overturn a few glasses or cups on the table so that they are facing down.

    • 3

Place various matching plates on top of the glasses. Try using a combination of pastel colors, some solid and some with patterns such as paisley or polka dots. This will not be the most sturdy cake stand, given that it is a temporary stand, so put these towards the back of the table and perhaps close to a wall, so that they don't get knocked over.

Place a doily on the plate of the makeshift cake stand, if you like.

    • 5

Create your own matching cake stands. Cut plywood down to the size of your square serving platters, which should be big enough to hold a cake of the size you would like to serve. Paint the square plywood, wooden table leg, pine-wood base, and wooden trim all the same color. Choose a color that will coordinate with the plates you have used in Step 3. Create a hole in the center of the plywood and the center of the pine-wood base using the drill. Attach the pine-wood base to the wooden table leg with wood glue and a screw. Attach the wooden table leg to the square plywood piece with the wood glue and a screw, as well. Attach the wooden trim to the square plywood piece along all of the edges; the square plywood piece is the top of the cake display and what the cake will rest on. Place the square plates on top of the homemade cake stand.
