How to Unsync Split Pane in Excel

Synchronized scrolling occurs when a spreadsheet or multiple spreadsheets have been split, arranged side by side and Synchronous Scrolling is selected. This causes all of the open spreadsheets to scroll in synch with the others. Synchronous scrolling is helpful when comparing data across multiple spreadsheets. When you view spreadsheets across multiple panes, Synchronous Scrolling is set by default. However, you can unsynch the split panes with a few simple steps.

  • Open the spreadsheet that has the split screens.

  • Click the "Synchronous Scrolling" button in the "Window" group on the "View" tab.

  • Close the split panes by clicking on the "Close" button in the upper-right corner of the pane. Repeat this step until only one pane remains open.

  • Click the "Maximize" button in the upper-right corner of the pane.

  • Click the "Save" button on the "Quick Launch" toolbar to save the changes.
