      Thread the needle and begin the stitch by tying the thread to the fabric with a slipknot. A slip knot is made by pulling the thread through the fabric, making a loop and guiding the needle through the loop before pulling the thread taut. Make a second slipknot to secure the thread to the fabric.

      Hold the thread with your left thumb and push the needle through the top of the fabric at the starting point close to the knot.

      Pull the thread up through the fabric a short distance from your starting point. Wrap the thread under the needle. You should create a teardrop-shaped loop with the needle through the center.

      Repeat steps 2 and 3 to add links to the chain. When you reach the desired length of the chain stitch, use a slip knot to end the stitch. Cut off any excess thread.
