How to Do a Chain Stitch in Sewing
The art of embroidery has been around for centuries. Decorative stitches create beautiful patterns and images on a variety of materials. It is quite simple to hand-sew a chain stitch. A series of loops is created and strung together creating a chain-like pattern.

1
Thread the needle and begin the stitch by tying the thread to the fabric with a slipknot. A slip knot is made by pulling the thread through the fabric, making a loop and guiding the needle through the loop before pulling the thread taut. Make a second slipknot to secure the thread to the fabric.

2
Hold the thread with your left thumb and push the needle through the top of the fabric at the starting point close to the knot.

3
Pull the thread up through the fabric a short distance from your starting point. Wrap the thread under the needle. You should create a teardrop-shaped loop with the needle through the center.

4
Repeat steps 2 and 3 to add links to the chain. When you reach the desired length of the chain stitch, use a slip knot to end the stitch. Cut off any excess thread.
