How to Determine Font in an Illustrator PDF

Adobe Illustrator allows users to save PDFs as layered or PDF/X (Portable Document Format Exchange) files that can be opened with professional versions of Adobe Acrobat. Use a professional version of Adobe Acrobat to view the document properties of an Adobe Illustrator PDF and discover information such as the PDF's security settings and font styles. Since some font substitutions within Adobe Illustrator PDFs have unappealing results, your ability to identify, find, purchase and install the document's original typefaces makes it possible to view a PDF document as it was originally designed and embed the correct font style into future versions.

Instructions

1. Open the Adobe Illustrator PDF file with a professional version of Adobe Acrobat.

2. Select "File" and "Properties" to reveal the "Document Properties" dialog box.

3. Choose the "Fonts" tab from within the "Document Properties" dialog box.

4. Review the list of fonts to determine the document's original fonts. Identify font substitutions and note the typeface names if necessary.
