Many people prefer organic deodorant because most deodorants and antiperspirants contain toxins, including synthetic fragrances and aluminum, that are harmful to health. Aluminum has been associated with health issues such as seizures and cancer. It's relatively easy and can be cost effective to make your own deodorant from a few organic ingredients found at a natural grocery store. Use essential oils that contain anti-bacterial properties to prevent odors. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

  • Arrowroot powder
  • Baking soda
  • Extra virgin coconut oil
  • Essential oils

Instructions

      Mix 1 cup arrowroot powder and 1/8 cup baking soda in a microwave-safe bowl.

      Add 5 tbsp. coconut oil and desired essential oils such as clove, spearmint, lemongrass, lavender, orange or lemon. Experiment with different essential oils to find a scent that works well for you.

      Place the mixture in the microwave on high for 30 seconds.

      Mix thoroughly until the mixture is crumbly, using a wooden spoon.

      Pack the hot mixture into a clean deodorant stick, pushing the mix down until there is no more room. Meticulously clean and dry sticks from purchased deodorants or buy a new one. This recipe will make two tubes of deodorant. Alternatively, scoop the mixture into a small container with a lid and apply it with your fingers or a cotton ball.

      Allow the stick to harden up at room temperature, approximately three to four hours.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you have sensitive skin, leave out baking soda or cut it down to 1 tsp.

  • Add 5 drops to 25 drops tea tree essential oil if desired. Some people don't like this scent.

  • Essential oils that contain anti-bacterial properties include rosemary, lavender, melaleuca, lavender, peppermint, spearmint, lemon, eucalyptus, lemon, clove, geranium, oregano, cinnamon and tea tree.
