How to Troubleshoot a Hipro HP-D3057F3R

The Hipro HP-D3057F3R is a 300-watt desktop power supply used in some Hewlett Packard computers. When the HP computer suddenly dies or experiences continual freezes for no apparent reason, you want to troubleshoot the power supply to make sure the correct voltage is reaching all the computer devices. Problems occur when a power outage or surge affects the power supply, or when the voltage levels in the power supply start to fluctuate.

Instructions

    • 1

Press the power button on the computer to see if it turns on. Listen for the fans to start spinning and look for front LED lights. A completely dead computer with no sound or lights emanating from it indicates a failed power supply.

    • 2

Connect the desktop to another power outlet to make sure the problem is not in the outlet to which it connects. Replace the power cord with another cord, as often a failed power cord can cause issues that may appear to be power supply related.

    • 3

Disconnect the power cord and all other cords from the back of the desktop tower. Turn the computer so the back is facing you. Get up close to the back power supply fan and try to detect a burnt electrical smell. This indicates power surge damage caused the Hipro power supply to burn out.

    • 4

Remove any screws holding the right side panel to the computer or remove any screws holding the case cover in place. Some computers require you to take the entire case cover off, instead of just the right side panel. Slide the panel or cover back toward you and off the computer.

    • 5

Lay the computer down and press firmly against all of the connectors coming from the power supply to the motherboard and computer devices. Moving the desktop from one location to another can cause the Hipro power supply cables to loosen. Reconnect the power supply cable to the computer and turn it on to see if the problem continues.

    • 6

Turn on a multimeter voltage tester and change it to the "DC" settings, the power output needed for computers. Insert the millimeter's black lead into the corresponding power supply connector's black cable hole. Insert the red lead into the corresponding power supply yellow cable hole. Read the voltage on the millimeter's digital screen to see if the power supply is producing enough power for the computer. If the reading is more than 14 or less than 10, you need to replace the Hipro HP power supply.
