A bridle knot secures live bait on a line.

A bridle knot, or specifically the double-loop bridle knot, is a classic fishing knot used for holding bait fish on a line. The knot firmly mounts the fish on the hook by inserting the line through the eye cavity and tying off. This is especially useful for live bait trolling. This is a challenging knot, so you may want to practice it a few days before you plan on fishing so that you can efficiently bait your hook when the time comes.

Instructions

    • 1

Make a loop in your fishing line and bring the end through the loop.

    • 2

Pass the end around for a second loop and through the center again.

    • 3

Place your hook through the noose and tighten the loop on your hook.

    • 4

Repeat steps one through three on the other end of the line, but tie off a pencil into the noose.

    • 5

Pull the hook end noose extra tight using the pencil for a better grip.

    • 6

Remove the pencil and slide the loop into the eye of a baiting hook.

    • 7

Thread the line through the eye tunnel of the bait fish.

    • 8

Remove the needle and pass the noose onto the other side of the fishing hook.
