How to Support Rafters

How to Support Rafters thumbnail
The wall studs and top plate support rafters.

Rafters rest on the top plate of the walls of a building. However, the position of the rafter on the plate is vital for the support of the roof. Installing rafters properly often requires a crew of three or more people. Crews support the rafter while it is being set in the proper position and secured in place. Does this Spark an idea?

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the position of the rafters on the top plate of the wall. Mark the position directly above the wall studs. The stud carries the weight of the roof directly to the foundation providing support to the roof of the building.

    • 2

Set one end of the rafter on one wall in the approximate position of the first rafter. Set the other end of the rafter on the opposite wall. At this point, the rafter is upside down if the interior of the building is open or laying flat on tops of the interior walls.

    • 3

Swing the rafter upright and into position. Adjust the ends so the rafter sets on the marks made in step one. Nail through the rafter at an angle into the top plate of the wall. Attach braces anchored in the ground or other portion of the building to support the rafter in place during construction.

    • 4

Mount additional rafters following the same process. Brace each of these rafters to the previously installed rafters to support them in position.

Tips & Warnings

  • Remove the braces after installing the gable end walls and roof sheathing.

  • Use caution when installing rafters. Most of the work is done at height and can lead to falls and injuries. Use secure scaffolding and ladders rather than standing or sitting on the tops of the wall plates or rafters.
