How to Paint With a Tablet in GIMP

A digital tablet is a square or rectangular plastic drawing tablet that connects to a computer with a USB cable. You can use a USB tablet to paint on a digital canvas using graphics software, such as GIMP, a free graphics creation and editing application. The tablet and its pen function the same as a mouse, but offers you better control over digital drawing and painting tools, such as GIMP's pencil, airbrush and paintbrush.

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a USB drawing tablet. Connect the tablet's USB cable to one of your computer's USB ports.

    • 2

Insert the driver disc included with the tablet into your computer's optical drive. Follow the installation prompts to install the driver. Remove the disc when installation is finished.

    • 3

Launch GIMP by clicking its icon or by clicking "Start," then typing "GIMP" into the search field and pressing "Enter."

    • 4

Create a new canvas by clicking "File," then "New." Enter the resolution you would like the image to be, such as "400" under "Height" and "400" under "Width" for a 400-by-400 resolution image, then click "Create."

    • 5

Select the "Brush" tool on GIMP's toolbar.

    • 6

Paint with the pen onto the tablet just as you would a normal paintbrush. The brush tool will move in sync with the tablet's pen, and an image will be painted onto GIMP's canvas.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can change the paintbrush settings in the box located directly beneath the toolbar.
