How to Make a Fabric Mushroom

Fabric mushrooms add charm to any decorating scheme. Arrange a few on a shelf, among other natural items such as birds, or sit a few alongside a fairy doll. Make your mushrooms in actual mushroom colored fabrics, such as tans, white and red polka dot for a natural setting or use colorful, fanciful prints to add a touch of whimsy to any room. Using a glue gun and basic hand stitching, your fabric mushrooms will be ready to display in your home in a short time.

Instructions

    • 1

Use any combination of fabric scraps you like for both the mushroom cap and the stem. For a 5-inch diameter mushroom cap, you will need a piece of fabric that is about 10 inches square. For the 5-inch stem on the mushroom, you will need a piece of fabric 7 by 5 inches.

    • 2

Cut a piece of card stock into a 6-inch circle. Cut out a pie-shaped wedge from the circle, about 2 inches wide on the outside. Wrap the two ends together to form a cone and tape together with masking tape. This will be the base of the mushroom cap.

    • 3

Cut a 5-by-5 inch piece of card stock. Roll the card stock into a tube and tape closed with masking tape. This will be the stem of the mushroom.

    • 4

Cut a piece of batting about 9 inches round. Lay it over the cone-shaped cap, wrapping it under the cone. Glue the batting to the inside of the cone with the hot glue gun. Cover most of the inside as well as the outside of the cap with batting.

    • 5

Wrap a long, narrow piece of batting around the stem and glue in place. Wrap a piece of fabric selected for the stem around the padded stem and glue in place. Position the stem inside the cap and glue to secure.

    • 6

Thread the needle with coordinating thread and knot the end.

    • 7

Place the fabric for the mushroom cap over the batting. The cap will resemble a triangular-shaped mushroom. For a rounded mushroom, stuff additional polyester fiberfill under the fabric to create the desired shape. Tuck the fabric under the cap and use the threaded needle to gather the edges together around the stem.

    • 8

Glue the gathered edges of the fabric on the cap to the stem.

Tips & Warnings

  • Add embellishments to the finished mushroom, as desired. Brush with a decoupage medium and sprinkle with glue, or glue on gems or buttons.

  • Make mushrooms in a variety of sizes and shapes in coordinating prints for a display.

  • As an alternative to a stiff card stock stem, remove the card stock after applying fabric, stuff the tube of batting and fabric with fiberfill and stitch the bottom ends of the fabric closed before gluing. Add a wire to the inside to make the stem more flexible and a few pebbles or small rocks to the bottom for stability.

  • Use care when working with a hot glue gun.
