How to Add a Metal Side Roof to a Trailer
Metal roofing is a popular alternative to shingle roofs. It is often found in rural areas and on barns. While it is commonly used on roofs with a greater pitch because it allows rain water and debris to easily flow down the roof and to the ground, it can also be installed on trailers. Installing metal roofing on a side roof as an addition to a trailer is similar to installing any other type of metal roof, only the roof of a trailer is usually flat, making for easier installation. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Position a ladder against the trailer and climb up it to the roof of the trailer. Walk over to the new roof structure attached to the side of the trailer and inspect the area. Verify the sheathing or other type of plywood is secure in place and hammer down any nails that are sticking up so they are flush with the sheathing.
-
2
Measure the length and width of the roof with a tape measure and multiply the two together to get the total square footage of the roof. This will help determine how much underlayment and metal roofing will be needed for installation.

3
Roll out the No. 15 felt underlayment beginning at either end of the side trailer roof so it is flush with the edge of the roof. Secure the underlayment to the sheathing underneath with a staple every 12 inches and cut off the underlayment when you reach the end of the roof with a utility knife.
-
4
Install the second row of underlayment just like the first was installed and continue along the roof of the trailer until the underlayment is covering the entire area. Lay the first piece of metal roofing down on top of the underlayment vertically so it is flush with the edge of the roof.
-
5
Hammer the roofing panel in place with roofing nails. Insert the roofing nails into the grooves between the ridges of the metal roofing. Add one nail every 8 inches down the panel. Overlap the second panel by one ridge and install it and all of the remaining panels in the first row the same way.
-
6
Set the second row directly above the first. Install the second row and all of the remaining rows just like the first row was installed.
