Every military branch supplies servicemen and -women with a military ID card.

The U.S. military provides you with a military ID card when you join, regardless of which branch you are serving. When your rank changes from a promotion or demotion, you must update your military ID card as soon as possible. Changing your rank on your military ID card is free of charge and you can accomplish it with little effort.

  • Military ID and PIN number or two forms of ID

      Receive your new rank orders. Your battalion or unit will be able to provide your orders for you.

      Set an appointment with your base's Personnel Services Office or ID card center. Some bases may not require an appointment. The Personnel Services Office is usually located in the vicinity of where you "In-Process" for a new duty station when you are reporting to your Permanent Change of Station (PCS). Access your branch's "Knowledge Online" account, such as Army Knowledge Online (AKO) or Navy Knowledge Online (NKO), if you are unsure of where your Personnel Services Office is located to get the building number.

      Go to your appointment and provide your current military ID and your PIN number that you selected for your current ID. If you do not have your military ID or PIN number, you will need to bring two forms of ID such as a driver's license and your Social Security card.

      Provide your new rank orders and receive your new military ID updated with your current rank.
