How to Sideslide on Two Water Skis

Low-bounce the weight off your water skis and turn into a sideways sliding position on two trick skis.

Difficulty: Moderately challenging
Instructions

Things You'll Need:

  1. Step 1

Use hand signals to tell the driver when you are going the right speed. If your trick skis sink down in the water and feel like they're bogging, the boat is going too slow. If your trick skis feel like they're skimming and sliding out, the boat is going too fast.

  2. Step 2

Ride directly behind the boat and assume a vertical crouch, bending your knees and arms. Keep your head up and your weight directly over the binders of your skis.

  3. Step 3

    Do small, rhythmic low-bounces.

  4. Step 4

Bounce up and turn your torso to the left, releasing your left hand as you turn.

  5. Step 5

Turn your skis to the left as you reach the high point of your bounce. If you are just beginning to learn this trick, only turn your skis 45 degrees, but as you progress try to turn them a full 90 degrees. Keep your skis shoulder-width apart.

  6. Step 6

Angle your bent knees away from the boat to prevent your forward edge from catching in the water.

  7. Step 7

Hold your left hand out behind you to help your balance.

  8. Step 8

Bounce and turn back forward to continue riding.

Tips & Warnings
  • If your skis slide out toward the boat as you are sidesliding, either the boat is going too fast or you are not crouched low enough.
  • If you catch an edge, you aren't angling your knees enough, or the boat is going too slow.
  • Stay low!
  • Release your right hand and turn to the right to sideslide on the opposite side.
  • Always wear a life vest when waterskiing.
