How to Make Smiley Faces With Letters & Symbols
Many people use smiley faces in instant messaging applications, social networking websites and even personal emails. The exact method of creating smiley faces using letters and symbols varies from application to application. However, the key combinations for entering the most general smileys, including a smile, frown or a laugh remain the same.

Make a smiling emoticon. Press and hold the Shift key, then press the ":" and ")" keys on the keyboard to form a smiley.

Create a sad smiley. Hold down the shift key, then press the ":" key followed by the "(" key to create a sad smiley.

Make a laughing smiley. Press Shift, the ":" key and "d" key to create a laughing smiley.

Make a teasing smiley. Press Shift, press the ":" key followed by "p" to form a teasing smiley.

Make a confused smiley. Again, press Shift, the ":" key followed by "s" to create a confused smiley.

If the Web application you are using offers animated smileys, your smiley will appear animated on screen when you type it using the normal key strokes.
