Instructions

    • 1

Remove any piles of material from around the yard. Piles of rock, dirt, wood, and other debris, natural or otherwise, serve as an ideal space for snakes.

    • 2

Throw away any stagnant water and move any containers or décor that may catch water. Stagnant water is the ideal breeding ground for tadpoles. Items ranging from bird baths to watering cans and buckets should be emptied or covered throughout warmer seasons.

    • 3

Rid gardens of leaves and accumulated materials. Snakes and lizards enjoy taking cover in these shaded areas, and even nesting there at times. Take a rake to gardens and areas that accumulate brush and leaves on a weekly basis to prevent this.

    • 4

Keep grass and shrubs trimmed as short as possible. Long grass attracts frogs, lizards, and snakes, as they can easily camouflage themselves within it. They will also take cover within overgrown shrubs and other green areas. Trim them at least once a week within the summer months.

    • 5

Block off dark and cool areas attached to your home, such as decks and crawlspaces. Board them up with thick plywood or specialty netting, available at any home supply store. All three reptiles enjoy spaces like this for sleeping and nesting.
