How to Compare Drupal & WordPress

How to Compare Drupal & WordPress thumbnail
WordPress and Drupal can both be used to set up a blog on the Web.

WordPress and Drupal are open-source blogging platforms and content-management systems. After you have purchased a domain name and set up hosting for your website, the next step is to choose a suitable platform to work with. Although the sheer amount of information on the WordPress and Drupal sites can seem overwhelming, the two platforms differ by a few major factors. These factors will determine which CMS you use on your site.

Instructions

    • 1

Write down a list of the features you want to have in your websites. For example, if you want to have a large number of plug-ins available to minimize the amount of programming you'll have to do, WordPress is your best option. However, if you want complete control over scripting your website, then Drupal is probably the platform for you. With its fast setup and array of plug-ins, WordPress is ideal for small sites. Larger websites with more features such as multiple languages and themes will benefit from the flexibility Drupal has to offer.

    • 2

Consider how much experience you have with HTML, PHP and CSS. Although both WordPress and Drupal are both CMSs, WordPress is more suited to the novice developer. Drupal has a basic interface and is designed for use by Web developers.

    • 3

Decide how much support you want to receive from other people. Although WordPress has a huge online help system to walk you through installing WordPress, adding plug-ins to your site and working with widgets, Drupal has a massive user community of professional Web developers who share advice and tips.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you're building a single-person website or blog and don't have much Web development experience, choose WordPress. If your prospective blog has more than 10 authors, use Drupal.
