How to Change the DSN Number on Windows 7

An ODBC Data Source Name, or DSN, stores user settings to connect to a database. Some system administrators give the DSN name a numeric value. To change this value, you must edit the DSN name in the ODBC administrator utility, found in your Administrative Tools section of the Windows Control Panel.

Instructions

    • 1

Click "Start," "Control Panel," "System and Security" and "Administrative Tools." All the tools listed in this window control the settings of your computer.

    • 2

Double-click the "Data Source (ODBC)" shortcut. The window that opens displays all of your DSN settings.

    • 3

Click the "System" tab. Click the DSN you want to edit and click the "Configure" button on the right side of the window.

    • 4

Type a new number or alphanumeric name for the DSN in the "Name" text box.

    • 5

Click "OK" to save your settings.

Tips & Warnings

  • Update any programs using the old DSN number to reflect the new name changes.
