How to Decorate a Box for a Box Auction

Make your box auction box special by going beyond simple wrapping paper.

Box auctions can be the centerpiece of a fundraiser. Bidders offer money for mystery items inside boxes, attempting to get the best prize from a collection of authentic or humorous items. Designing the box allows the donor the opportunity to show off creative and artistic skills. When decorating a box for a box auction, consider the item that lies within. Make the box a reflection of the item through color and decorative enhancement choices to pique bidder's interest and make the most money for the cause.

• Box auction item
• Craft box
• Spray paint
• Beads
• Glitter
• Faux gems and pearls
• Leather
• Metallic studs
• Hot glue gun
• Clear hot glue sticks
• Clear-drying white glue

Instructions

1. Use a theme for your box by considering the item that will go inside it. Find enhancements that reflect the color and style of the item, mirroring some aspect of the item in the box decoration.

2. Purchase a structured, heavy-duty cardboard box from a hobby shop. Craft boxes like these are made to withstand painting and enhancements without wilting or falling apart.

3. Spray the box and lid with a glossy spray paint. Match the item inside the box when selecting a color.

4. Apply decorative enhancements to reflect the style of your box. For example, if the item inside the box is sparkly, use glitter, faux gemstones and faux pearls. If the item is leather, use metal studs or leather material to cover the box.

5. Apply a decorative element, as described above, to the box top to draw the bidder's attention. A glitzy box could have a faux gemstone design while a more masculine box could use quilted leather or even a metallic surface treatment.

6. Apply a bead of hot glue around the box lid edge and affix a matching decorative element. Whether the items are metal studs or faux pearls, simply press the items into the hot glue to attach them.

7. Mirror the lid edge along the bottom border of the box. Apply another line of hot glue around the bottom margin and affix matching embellishments.

Tips & Warnings

• When selecting a box, be sure it is big enough to fit a large item, or consider a box that is overly large for a small item to deceive the purchaser.

• Stay "green" when you recover an old gift box, cigar box or wine crate for your box auction item.

• Use an unusual item such as a lid handle or side handles to make your box even more custom. Old doorknobs, braided jute or smooth and stained wood accents are some ideas.

• Do not use acrylic paints or watercolor paints on your cardboard box. Paints like these are water-heavy and may compromise the structure of the box.
