How to Change an iPhone Maps App

When you're lost or trying to figure out how to get somewhere, you might want to consult an electronic map with your iPhone, but prefer not to use the native Maps app. Apple's default Maps app uses Google technology to display your current location and help you find maps while you're connected to the Internet via Wi-Fi or a cellular data network. You can't use the Maps app when the iPhone is offline. If you want to use a different maps app, such as one that displays maps even when you're not connected to the Internet, you can download a third-party app directly to the device.

  • Press the "Home" button on your iPhone, located below the multi-touch display.

  • Tap the "App Store" icon on the home screen.

  • Tap "Search," then type "maps" in the search field, and then tap "Search" once more.

  • Tap the name of a maps app from the list of search results to read details, see screen shots and read customer reviews. For example, you could read about "oMaps (Offline Maps)," "City Maps 2Go -- Lite" or "Free City Maps and Walks."

  • Tap the word "Free" or the price next to the name of the maps app, then tap "Install." Type in your Apple ID at the prompt. The map app downloads and installs on your iPhone.

  • Tap the icon of the map app on the home screen to launch it.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can't delete the native Maps app from your iPhone, but you can put its icon into a folder or move it to a different screen, such as the last screen on your device, to keep it separate from the app icons you regularly use. You can move the third-party maps app to a position on your home screen where you keep your most-used apps.
