How to Disable BitLocker

Save

A new security feature offered in Windows 7 Ultimate and Enterprise editions is BitLocker drive encryption. This utility encrypts your entire hard drive, which helps to protect your data and passwords from unwanted access. Without the password for your account on the system, your data appears as random garbled characters. If you need to update your computer, you'll need to temporarily disable BitLocker protection. If you no longer wish to use BitLocker at all, you'll need to decrypt your hard drive.

  • Click "Start" from your Windows desktop and click "Control Panel." Click "Security" and then click "BitLocker Drive Encryption."

  • Click "Turn Off BitLocker" and click "Disable BitLocker Drive Encryption." This will temporarily disable BitLocker by storing the key to decrypt the drive in plain text. Your drive will not be decrypted, but will still be easily accessible for updating.

  • Click "Turn Off BitLocker" and click "Decrypt the Volume" to completely remove BitLocker protection. All of your data will be decrypted.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can use "BitLocker To Go" to encrypt an external volume like a flash drive or USB hard drive.
