How to Make a Tagged Photo on Facebook Using Picnik

Facebook has some powerful features to help you store, catalog and share your photos with your online friends, but as of the time of publication, one feature it lacks is a built-in image editor. If you'd like to make changes to your image before adding it to your Facebook albums, you would ordinarily have to edit it in an image-editing software, then manually upload it from your hard drive to your Facebook account to categorize and tag. However, Picnik is a free, online image-editing application that allows you to edit your image and seamlessly upload it to your Facebook account within Picnik, then tag it appropriately.

Instructions

  1. Uploading to Facebook

    • 1

Visit the Picnik homepage and click the green "Get Started" button in the middle of the page.

    • 2

Click the "Upload a Photo" button on the left column. A pop-up window appears displaying the contents of your hard drive.

    • 3

Browse your hard drive for the image you want to upload to Facebook. Double-click the image to automatically upload it to Picnik.

    • 4

Edit the image to your liking. Click the buttons across the top of the page to achieve the desired effects. You can auto-fix (automatically fix with one click), crop, rotate, resize or sharpen your image. You can also remove the red-eye effect on a person in the image, and modify the brightness, contrast and color settings.

    • 5

Click the "Save & Share" tab on the upper right menu.

    • 6

Select the dimensions, file format and compression quality of your image.

    • 7

Click the "Facebook" tab in the "Save & Share" sub-menu.

    • 8

Click the "Connect" button to begin connecting Picnik to your Facebook account. A pop-up Facebook window appears. Log in to your Facebook account, if prompted.

    • 9

Click the blue "Allow" button in the lower right corner of the pop-up window. The window automatically closes and redirects you to your Picnik sharing dashboard.

    • 10

Type a caption for the photo in the "Caption" field.

    • 11

Select the Facebook album into which you want to upload your photo.

    • 12

Click the green "Save Photo" button to finish uploading the photo to Facebook. Picnik automatically posts the image to your Facebook wall.

    Tagging the Photo

    • 13

Log into Facebook (if you haven't already), visit your profile and click your newly uploaded photo on your wall.

    • 14

Click the "Tag This Photo" link in the left column below the photo.

    • 15

Click a person's face on the image to begin tagging the photo.

    • 16

Type the person's name in the pop-up box that appears, then press 'Enter." You can also click the person's name in the list that appears in the box.

    • 17

Click the "Done Tagging" link on the left below the photo.

Tips & Warnings

  • In addition to your computer's hard drive, you can also use Picnik to edit and upload your photos from a Picasa, Photobucket, Flickr or MySpace account, as well as editing and re-uploading photos already in your Facebook albums. Scroll to the bottom of the Picnik homepage and click the logo of the service you wish to upload your photos from, then follow the instructions to select and upload the desired image to the Picnik servers. The rest of the steps are identical to uploading from your hard drive.

  • Facebook shrinks any image larger than its maximum allowable dimensions to fit into the Facebook photo-album display. It also compresses the file size, reducing the image quality slightly. For best results, resize your image while it's still in Picnik, to no larger than 720 pixels in width and 550 pixels in height -- those are Facebook's maximum dimensions.
